The Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice on May 11 honored the lawyer, activists and doctor involved in stopping sterilization without consent at hospitals in the 1970s Madrigal v. Quilligan, CV75-2057. Above left, attorney Antonia Hernandez, from left, was fresh out of UCLA law school when Dr. Bernard Rosenfeld, right, an intern at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, came to her with accounts of minority women being sterilized when they checked into the hospital to give birth. The woman behind them is not identified.
At left, other recipients of the Justice Award, from left, Supervisor Gloria Molina and Olivia G. Rodriguez, flank Hernandez. Molina agreed that her organization would act as a plaintiff in the case, and Rodriguez, now with the Chicana Service Action Center, interviewed potential plaintiffs and made sure they appeared in court. Directly above, Karin Davalos, president of the Los Angeles County Commission for Women, joins Rodriquez. Rosenfeld and Evelyn Martinez, now of First 5 LA, testified before the state Legislature to get the medical consent laws changed. They received the Special Justice Award at the event, attended by more than 300 people at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
